How to Use This Bibliography

This informal bibliography is provided for students and researchers working with authors from Africa, the Caribbean, and South Asia (India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan) who write in English. It is far from comprehensive, but it does cover many early sources and may be a useful place to pick up some sources to get started. You can find many more books and articles about these authors in the MLA Bibliography online through Griffin.

Searching for an author by name in the “Author” field will find all writings by that author. If you want to search for writings about an author, you must search for that author’s last name in the “Subject Search” field. Writings about works or authors are labeled “secondary.” Entries not labeled “secondary” are usually primary works (novels, plays, poems, etc.).

To find writings from a particular country, place that country’s name in the “Subject Search” field. You can also search for all African literature by searching for “Africa” in the same field.

This bibliography does not index scholarship by the titles of the works discussed, but if you enter a title of a work in the “Title Search” field you will find much of the scholarship about that work.

As of May 2008, this bibliography will no longer be actively maintained or added to, but you may still find it useful. For comments and questions, write Paul Brians at brians@wsu.edu.
