Description

Included in the collection are 105 family portraits and 3 boxes of lantern slides. The family portraits depict Edwin L. Chalcraft, his wife, Alice Fawcett (Pickering) Chalcraft, their children, Edwin Pickering Chalcraft and Alice Pickering Chalcraft, as well as sundry relatives. There is also a portrait of William Pickering, Governor of Washington Territory from 1862-1866.

The majority of the glass lantern slides are scenes of the grounds, buildings and students at Chemawa, an Indian Training School near Salem, Oregon. Included are classroom scenes, sports, music, and work activities of the students. The slides are assumed to be the work of Edwin L. Chalcraft and bear his descriptive notes along the binding tape.

The collection is organized into two sections: Chalcraft-Pickering family portaits and lantern slides. The portraits are contained in one box of twenty folders, in a rough chronological sequence of familial groupings. The lantern slides comprise three boxes and follow Chalcraft's original order.

Edwin Chalcraft was an Indian agency teacher in Chehalis, Washington; Chemawa, Oregon, and other agencies in Wyoming, Oklahoma and Oregon.
