Description

Jesuit missionary; Superior of the Oregon mission; Procurator of Missouri Province. Chiefly correspondence, in French, from Pierre Jean de Smet to his brother Francois and Jesuit superiors, describing missionary experiences and travels in the West. Other correspondence between De Smet and his relatives and relates to De Smet's welfare, finances, and contemporary events. Includes graphic art by Father Nicolas Point, who accompanied De Smet on one of his many journeys from St. Louis to the Northwest. Also includes legal documents of the De Smet's in Belgium, maps drawn by De Smet, and the notes of Eugene Laveille for his book about De Smet.
