Instructions
The special purpose of this database is to make it easier to find specific kinds of music in the CD collection in Holland/Terrell Library, particularly within the classical music collection.
- To find all works by a specific composer, enter the last name in the “Composer Search” field and click the “go” button.
- When you do not want to confine your search to works by a specific composer, use “Search keyword field only.” Typical terms involve period, country, and genre. Here are examples of some of the kinds of searches you can do in this field:
- Nationality: “Germany,” “France,” (names of countries—German” or “French” will not work), “USA,” not America. “Latin America” and “Africa” also work.
- Period: “Middle Ages“ (not “Medieval”), “Renaissance,” “Baroque,“ “Classical,” “Romantic,” “Impressionist,” “20th C.”
- Form: “quartet,” “symphony,” “orchestral,”
- Instrument: “piano,” “violin,” “vocal,” etc.
- For works by female composers enter either “woman” or “women.” Both work identically.
- To find works by African-American composers and some performers, enter “African-American.”
- Other good keywords: “sacred,” “chamber,” “wind,”
- Using the “Search all Fields” option will get you more hits and is useful for combining composer name with form, for instance, “Beethoven quartet.” However, if you get too many irrelevant hits, try using keywords instead.
- The browse categories are suggestive and may give you ideas, but you cannot rely on them to be complete.
- To view all the CDs in the collection 20 at a time, click on “Browse all CDs here.”
This database is not an official product of the WSU libraries and they are not responsible for any errors or omissions. It is updated on an occasional basis, so may not include some recently acquired CDs you can find by using Griffin. To make suggestions, please write Paul Brians at brians@wsu.edu.
