This photograph is of instructor Mel Gaskill and students in the Aviation Mechanics program showing some of the items they produced as part of their class work. Women in this program went on to become a "Rosie the Riveter". Women played important roles on the homefront during wartime and this photo demonstrates the changing role of women as they entered school programs and jobs in areas that were previously denied to them. The Eugene Vocational School was founded in 1938 and was a predecessor to Lane Community College, established in 1964. Vocational schools and community colleges have responded to the changing educational and workforce training needs of both men and women.

C.E.S. Wood was a soldier, lawyer, writer, and painter who is known for his friendship with Chief Joseph which developed after Wood witnessed and translated Joseph's surrender speech as a member of the U.S. Army. Later in his life Wood became an important figure in the cultural life of Portland (Oregon) and San Francisco. As a writer and public figure, Wood was scrutinized by the U.S. government for his radical views expressed during his legal defenses of Marie Equi and Emma Goldman. This photograph, from the Charles Erskine Scott Wood and Erskine Wood Family Papers 1867-1982, shows Wood with his first wife and grandchildren, many of whom became civic leaders as adults.

Albany College, the predecessor of Lewis & Clark College, was founded in 1867 by the Presbyterian founders of Albany, Oregon. Gender equality was a priority for the College; its first four graduates were women, and as this photo illustrates, athletic opportunities were provided to women from the earliest years of the institution.

Glen Coffield is occasionally referred to as Oregon's first hippie. Coffield first came to Oregon during World War II as a conscientious objector assigned to the Camp Angel Civilian Public Service camp near Waldport, Oregon. After the war, Coffield relocated to the Mt. Hood wilderness where he established the Gruntvig Folk School and published a numerous small poetry journals and newsletters. While in the Waldport CPS camp with Coffield, Kemper Nomland attempted to capture Coffield's creativity in this painting. This painting was donated to Lewis & Clark College by Kemper Nomland and is just a part of the College's extensive holdings relating to the Oregon Civilian Public Service Camps.

Poet laureate and National Book Award winner William Stafford taught at Lewis & Clark College for thirty years. Special Collections holds all of Stafford's personal papers including 20,000 pages of daily writings and typescripts, thirty years of correspondence, 15,000 photographs, audio and video recordings, teaching materials, and books and broadsides by Stafford and other poets.

This image comes from the Scrapbook of Daniel H. Labby, emeritus Professor of Medicine at OHSU. The scrapbook consists of photographs of classmates and faculty during Dr. Labby's school years at UOMS. There is a certain levity or good humor in the image of our female medical student that elucidates the camaraderie and familiarity among colleagues and teachers.

Linus Pauling is considered to be OSU's most famous alumnus, achieving significance as one of the 20th century's most brilliant chemists. Pauling's papers are housed at OSU Special Collections. William Jasper Kerr served longer (1907-1932) than any other president in OSU's history. Under his leadership, Oregon Agricultural College was transformed from a small, financially struggling college to one of the leading land-grant institutions in the country.

This image is one of a series of photographs taken by a Seattle Engineering Department photographer of the construction of Smith Tower. In 1914, when the Smith Tower was completed, it was the fourth tallest building in the world. It remained the tallest building west of the Mississippi for almost 50 years. The Smith Tower has had various owners since it opened, but the City of Seattle is not among them.

Developed by Seattle inventor Edmund A. Smith, the "Iron Chink" was named after the Chinese laborers it was invented to replace, reflecting the anti-Asian racism of the time. Used to gut and clean fish, the automated machine could accomplish work many times faster than the most skilled hand butcher, increasing cannery profits, but forcing thousands to find other work.

The Palouse region that includes the city of Pullman remains a rich area for the cultivation of wheat and lentils. This image documents early methods for the storage and transport of the harvest. Upon the hill in the background is the nascent Washington State University.

Pacific American Fisheries, Inc conducted major fishing and canning operations in Puget Sound and Alaska between 1899 and 1965, with headquarters in Bellingham, Washington. The company had both regional and international significance as one of the largest processors of Pacific salmon in the world for much of that period.
