Tips for Searching

Search basics
Type one or more search terms into the
search box and press Enter or click on the Retrieve button.
A search results screen will be displayed,
with results sorted by the number of matching search terms found (in
descending order).
Automatic
“and” of search terms
By default, results are returned that
contain all of the search terms entered, regardless of word order.
Some example searches:
yellowstone brown bears
virginia woolf maps
anthropology native americans
Phrase searching
To perform a search for an exact phrase,
enter the phrase in quotation marks.
Some example searches:
"harry truman” volcano
"montana state legislature"
Additional search options
Browse by NWDA Category: Search
the database by NWDA browsing term.
Browse by Material Types: Search
the database by one of the material types listed in this document.
Browse titles in NWDA: Browse the
database alphabetically by title.
Viewing search results
If your search retrieves one or more
documents, a search results screen will be displayed. This screen lists
the title, repository name, and summary information for the finding
aid document, along with the number of times that the search terms were
found in the document.
Note that document size information is
provided, which provides an indication of the amount of time it will
take to process and display the finding aid.
View options:
View search terms in document: View matching
search terms and the words immediately surrounding them.
Complete Finding Aid: View the complete
finding aid, with matching search terms highlighted.
Printer-Friendly Finding Aid: View
the finding aid in an easy-to-print format.
E-mail this document: Send the
document’s unique identifier to yourself or to a colleague via electronic
mail.
